Smith & Jones Bootmaker is a footwear retailer based in the United Kingdom with 42 retail sites distributed around the country. Smith & Jones Bootmaker was founded in 1886. 1857 saw the establishment of a footwear store by Alfred and Emma Jones in Bayswater, London. In 1858, they were united in marriage. Jones was a pioneer in the installation of electric illumination in retail enterprises, having done so in the early 1900s. Their nine sons went on to become apprentices and then business owners under the name A. Jones and sons, which they continued to operate under until their deaths. Pre-made shoes in three different widths were made available by the company, which was one of their breakthroughs.

A new warehouse was built in Eastbourne after World War II, and the company grew throughout the UK, modernising existing stores as well as opening new stores in new locations. After Jones’ retail outlets outgrew the company’s ability to produce at its facilities in 1955, the company became a member of the Church Corporation’s group of enterprises. Jones Bootmaker was formed in Manchester in 1994 as a ‘City Bootmaker’ shop, and the company entered into operation as Jones Bootmaker in 1996.

In 2001, the Jones Bootmaker company was sold to a private investor, then in 2006, the company was sold to a financial consortium. Following the purchase of Church’s by Prada in 1999, this occurred. Former owners Macintosh Retail Group purchased the company in 2010, then Alteri Investors purchased the company in 2015. Both of these companies were owned by Apollo Global Management.

Jones was purchased by Endless LLP in a pre-pack administration arrangement on March 26, 2017, after Alteri filed a notice of intent to appoint administrators for the company on March 15, 2017. According to the firm, this resulted in the survival of 72 sites. Pavers Shoes purchased the chain from Endless in February of this year, and it has been in operation ever since.
