Wicked is a musical with music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz and a book by Winnie Holzman. It is based on the 1995 Gregory Maguire novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, an alternative telling of the 1939 film The Wizard of Oz and L. Frank Baum’s classic 1900 novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.
The story follows Elphaba, the future Wicked Witch of the West, and Galinda, the Good Witch of the South, who meet as sorcery students at Shiz University. Wicked tells their story from different points of view, with events occurring in the Land of Oz long before Dorothy’s arrival.
The original Broadway production opened in 2003 and ran for more than 1,900 performances, winning three Tony Awards and ten Drama Desk Awards. A successful Broadway touring production followed, as did productions in several other countries. Over the years, Wicked has become one of the most popular musicals ever produced.
