Wilko? James Kemsey and Mary Cooper opened the first Wilkinson store in Leicester in 1930, on 151 Charnwood Street, and a second store in Wigston Magna, near Leicester, in 1932. In total, the business had nine locations by 1939.

Despite Swann’s desire to pursue other business prospects, the family’s relationship remained intact.

In August 2017, Wilko and the GMB began negotiations about their plan to cut 4,000 jobs at the company. This contrasted sharply with unflattering rumours that Lisa Wilkinson had just collected a $3 million payout. The first time Wilko sold through a third-party retailer was in March 2018, when the company began selling 285 of its own-label products in Dubai through ACE shops. Starting in June 2020, Warpaint London, a colour cosmetics brand, will be sold at Wilko locations across the United Kingdom. In January 2022, Wilko announced the closure of 15 stores due to the exorbitant expense of long-term leases.
