Martin Parker went to England from his modest Dutch birthplace of Beverwijk to start a mail-order bulb business during the depression in 1933. Having grown and exported bulbs for three generations in Holland, he felt ready to establish a new business in England. J. Parker’s started small. The Manchester wholesale firm began in a modest terraced house on Chester Road. Martin and Joan packaged things in the garden shed. They traded from home as a modest business from the late 1930s until the Second World War.

1950s Gardening Boom The family firm grew steadily, and Martin’s son Christopher joined in the 1950s. The family expanded the enterprise during a 1950s gardening boom. For bulb cultivation, they bought farmland near Anwick, Lincolnshire. The corporation thrived in the 1950s. The company’s retail division opened in Manchester, while wholesale began in Anwick, Lincolnshire.

First national postal strike in Britain began in 1971. Parker’s invested nearly a million pounds in undelivered catalogues during the 7-week strike. To save the company after the strike, the family sold acres of land in Anwick and their mailing list. Chris Parker, Martin’s son, took over retail and wholesale in the early 1970s. Reader offers with bargains and price comparisons from competitors, which was controversial back then, made this profitable and stirred up the horticultural sector. Retail catalogues expanded from little reads to full-range shopping catalogues in the 1970s.

The company grew and moved to Hadfield Street in Manchester in the early 1980s, where it remains today! The corporation transferred retail dispatching to Manchester and wholesale to Anwick. Martin ran the Anwick warehouse into his dotage, meeting clients at his beloved garden centre.
