The Wilko family opened a single hardware store in 1930. For almost 90 years, we’ve made families’ lives easier with simple, cost-effective, and reliable solutions. We call them minor triumphs. We went from a single store to an Omnichannel retailer with over 400 sites in a short time. We’ve done this by listening to our customers and exceeding their expectations. Making things better for our families, communities, and the planet has always been at the heart of what we do at Wilko.
Wilko is a British high-street retailer selling homewares and household products since 2014. It was known as Wilkinson Cash Stores from 1930 to 1941 and Wilkinson Hardware Stores from 1941 to 2014. James Kemsey Wilkinson and his family founded the company in 1930. Tony Wilkinson, the founder’s son, started as a branch manager in 1960 and became chairman in 1972. Tony Wilkinson stepped down in June 2005. His daughter Lisa Wilkinson and niece Karin Swann assumed his duties. In 2014, Lisa Wilkinson bought Karin Swann’s family’s 50% ownership in the company.
James Kemsey and Mary Cooper opened the first Wilkinson store in Leicester in 1930, and the second in Wigston Magna, a Leicester suburb, in 1932. By 1939, there were nine locations. The Beaconsfield store is featured in the film Brief Encounter (1945). As of the late 1980s, it had 78 locations, which had grown to about 150 by the time of Wilkinson’s founder’s death in 1997. Wilkinson opened a store in Castle Douglas, Scotland, on January 23, 2009, replacing The Co-operative Group. Stores opened in Scotland in July, November, and December. Scotland’s 2010 openings include Hamilton, Kilmarnock, Greenock, and Livingston.
Instead of opening new stores, Wilkinson has taken over the old Kwik Save in Great Bridge, the former Safeway in Halesowen, and the former Marks & Spencer in Dudley (July 1991). In 1990, Marks & Spencer closed its Dudley store to open a new store in the adjacent Merry Hill Shopping Centre. The Dudley store was so successful that a £250,000 expansion to the upper floor of the property was built three years ago. Wilkinson was one of the UK’s fastest growing stores at the time.
With the renaming of Wilko in 2012, practically all of Wilkinson’s outlets were renamed by 2014. In 2014, Karin Swann sold her 50% investment in the company to Tony Wilkinson, Christine Wilkinson, and Lisa Wilkinson, giving them complete ownership. Swann’s desire to pursue other business interests did not cause a family feud. Wilko and the GMB began talks in August 2017 about cutting over 4,000 jobs. Lisa Wilkinson allegedly received a £3 million payoff. In March 2018, Wilko began selling 285 of its own-brand products at ACE stores in Dubai, marking a new chapter in its history. Warpaint London has signed a deal with Wilko to launch colour cosmetics in UK stores in June 2020. To conserve money, Wilko announced in January 2022 that it will close 15 stores with longer leases.
