Tim Slade, a former police officer, and Jules Leaver, a business graduate, founded the company in Méribel, France, in 1988. It was at this point that the pair decided to start selling t-shirts they had printed with designs special to the resort, which they then re-sold to other skiers on the mountain. For the next many years, they travelled to numerous ski resorts, where they produced and sold ski and outdoor gear. Fat Face’s first store was located at London’s Fulham Road in 1993 and called after the Face de Bellevarde hill in Val-d’Isère. Livingbridge paid £5 million buying 40 percent of the company in 2000. A private equity group, Advent International, bought Livingbridge’s stake in FatFace in 2005 and rebranded the company.

Bridgepoint Capital bought Fat Face for £360 million in 2007, making Slade and Leaver a profit of £90 million on the deal. Bridgepoint had to write off half of the company’s value because of the Great Recession’s impact on revenues. Although sales rebounded in 2010 and 2011[9], Fat Face returned to a small profit in the following year.[10] This plan to raise $110 million by floating a quarter of Bridgepoint on the London Stock Exchange in 2014 was cancelled when investors indicated a lack of confidence in the company’s future.

As of March, Liz Evans is the new CEO, after Anthony Thompson, who stepped down. Prior to Oasis/Warehouse, Evans served as CEO. Taking over as chairman of FatFace from Alan Giles, who had been chairman since 2007, Bridgepoint appointed Stuart Rose, a former Marks and Spencer Chief Executive, in 2013. After paying a $2 million ransom to cyber thieves working for Conti in January 2021, Fat Face informed customers and workers in March 2021 that they’d been the target of a ransomware attack.
