J Parkers
In 1933, when the Great Depression was at its height, Martin Parker left his humble village of Beverwijk, Holland, and boarded a plane to England to launch a mail-order bulb business. He came from a family in Holland that had been growing and exporting bulbs for three generations, and he felt ready to launch a new business in England.
J. Parker’s was built from rather insignificant origins. A modest terraced house on Chester Road in Manchester served as the initial location of the wholesale operation. After that, Martin and his wife Joan took over the business, and they used the garden shed as a distribution centre for their wares. From the late 1930s until the end of the second world war, they maintained a home-based, low-volume trading activity that they had begun in the early years of the conflict.
The Gardening Boom of the 1950s The company expanded gradually over the years, and in the 1950s, Martin’s son Christopher joined the company that the family owned. In the 1950s, there was a brief period of prosperity in the gardening industry, which encouraged the family to grow the business. They came to an agreement to purchase some land in Anwick, Lincolnshire, in order to cultivate bulbs. The decade of the 1950s was a very prosperous one for the corporation. In roughly the same period of time, the wholesale operation of the business started in Anwick, Lincolnshire, while the retail operation of the company was established in Manchester and is run from there.
The future looks promising for J. Parker’s as they have already accomplished their growth objective for the next 5 years in just 12 months in 2021! CEO Paul Parker is thrilled to continue developing the business organically, with his family at the helm, as they continue to provide innovative and quality products at competitive rates, assisted with market-leading customer service.
