History Of The Royal British Legion

On May 15, 1921, four national associations of ex-Servicemen that had established themselves after the end of the First World War came together to form The British Legion. These organisations were as follows:

• The National Association of Discharged Sailors and Soldiers
• The British National Federation of Discharged and Demobilized Sailors and Soldiers
• The Comrades of The Great War
• The Officers’ Association

Field Marshal Earl Haig and Tom Lister, who was a member of The Federation of Discharged and Demobilised Sailors and Soldiers, are the two men who may be credited with playing a significant role in the consolidation of these various organisations. The position of President of the Royal British Legion that Lord Haig held until his passing was held by Lord Haig. The conflict had seen the participation of almost six million men. 1.75 million people who returned home had experienced some type of handicap, and of those, half were permanently crippled.

Then there were those who were financially dependent on those who had gone off to war, such as spouses and children, widows and orphans, as well as the parents who had lost sons in the war, on whom they were frequently financially dependent. The Royal British Legion was founded in order to provide support for individuals who had endured hardships as a direct result of their participation in the First World War. Since that time, The Royal British Legion have been providing assistance to members of the Armed Forces community as well as their families.

The new plastic-free poppy

Every year, they come together to honor and give thanks to the brave men and women who have sacrificed their lives for their freedom. The poppy has played an integral part in this commemoration for almost a century. This year, The Royal British Legion are proud to introduce a new plastic-free poppy, made entirely from paper. Not only is it more environmentally friendly, but it also showcases a new design while maintaining the iconic poppy shape. This is the first time in almost three decades that the design has been updated. As they remember the fallen heroes, let them also celebrate the evolution of this global symbol of Remembrance.
