The business first opened its doors in 1819 under the name Johnston & Co. It has survived some of the most tumultuous periods in Irish history and grown since then to become the country’s leading book retailer. The company was acquired by Charles Eason and his son from W.H. Smith in 1886, during the exciting era of Parnell and the Land League.

The company’s main focus was on contributing to the literary and industrial revolutions of the 19th century. Their bookstands on trains could only be successful if the literacy rate increased.
