Two brothers who were crazy about surfing started SALTROCK in 1988. The two brothers traveled all the way to London just so they could go surfing. “Take them to the nearest place there’s surf,” read the ticket instructions, so the gang got on the next train heading in that direction.
When Angus and Ross, two artists, realized they had spent all their money in Cornwall, their enjoyment came to an end. They manufactured and sold surf-themed T-shirts using patterns made from a Salvation Army rug, tape, and nails to darken an Austin Allegro. They also constructed a printing screen from materials they acquired or discovered. A new South African company was named Saltrock after the founders’ favorite surf destination.
Many people found value in the ideas. Surfers in the west and south admired the brothers’ flair, thus their products were in high demand. The same Devon workshop gave birth to their distinctive surf-inspired designs, and it is still in use today.
The values they cherish the most serve as a source of motivation for their creative endeavors. Proof of the quality and durability of Saltrock‘s products is the fact that many of its original customers are still purchasing the label’s antique items.
