In 1988, SALTROCK was founded by two surf-mad brothers. The only reason the two brothers made the long journey to London was to go surfing. Following the instructions on their tickets, which said, “Take them to the nearest place there’s surf,” the group boarded the next train bound for the shore.

The two painters, Angus and Ross, had their fun cut short when they realized they had spent all their money in Cornwall. Using a Salvation Army rug, tape, and nails to blacken up an Austin Allegro, they printed and sold T-shirts with surf-themed patterns. They also made a printing screen using materials they received or found. In homage to the beloved surf spot of its founders, a new South African corporation was given the name Saltrock.

The concepts were very popular. Because their style was so unique and beloved by surfers in the south and west, the brothers’ items were in short supply.
Their unique surf-inspired designs were born in the same Devon workshop, and they still use it today.

They get inspiration for their artistic pursuits from the principles they hold most dear. The fact that many of Saltrock‘s first buyers are still buying the label’s vintage items is evidence of the quality and longevity of the products they produce.
