They’ve been building stronger connections to wildlife for 200 years. Change-makers from the start, from Darwin to Attenborough, they’ve always broken new ground in conservation science and been passionate advocates for wildlife.

By taking bold steps to pioneer new architecture, they’ve created unique spaces of wonder and learning, advancing knowledge to better protect wildlife and sparking a lifelong love of animals. Whether through popularising the name “Aquarium”, inspiring Winnie the Pooh or causing Londoner’s to become obsessed with giraffes.

They are a pioneering group, not afraid to try new things or to be the first to do something. One of their founding members was the first woman to become a fellow of a learned society, and many other women at ZSL have also broken barriers.

They were the first to document new species in the wild, from the Okapi to the horned frog, and they have spearheaded international breeding programs to protect species and reintroduce them to the wild; they have used breakthrough innovations to improve animal monitoring; and state-of-the-art technologies to detect and prevent wiping out entire species.

To this day, they are motivated by the same pioneering spirit and the need to make animals matter in the world, and they use cutting-edge methods and technologies to increase their effect while mobilizing communities to create a better, more equitable future. Not until that future has arrived will they rest.

British Sign Language Tours

Throughout the year, London Zoo hosts special days with many British Sign Language-interpreted tours and talks.

Explore the incredible animals of London Zoo and gain insight into ZSL’s global conservation efforts with the help of John Wilson, a Deaf presenter. So that you can see something new each time you visit the Zoo, the tour route may be rotated on a monthly basis.

Meeting point for tours is in front of the Terrace Restaurant and gift shop, on the huge map in Barclay Court. They recommend getting to the Zoo 15–30 minutes before the tour begins so you can get your bearings and make your way to the meeting point from the entrance, which opens at 10 am every day.

Tours are run on selected dates throughout the year at 11:15 am and 2:15 pm.

Relaxed Opening Tours

People on the autism spectrum and those with other neurodiversities can enjoy the Zoo in a stress-free setting by attending one of the relaxed opening tours.

Come and enjoy the tranquility of their Zoo in the middle of Regent’s Park. Come in through a private door before the zoo opens to the public and you may watch the animals get ready for the day while listening to their rustling.

Please note that in order to provide the greatest possible experience, their Community Engagement team guides these sessions along a predetermined itinerary that has been discussed and agreed upon with their animal and operation teams in advance. For the protection of their guests and the animals, they cannot permit free access to the Zoo outside of their regular business hours.

At 10 a.m., when their gates open, the tours will end, but you are free to stay and look around the zoo at your leisure.

Both before the Zoo opens to the public and after it closes, excursions can be taken at a more leisurely pace.
