In 2000, my husband and I launched our chocolate company, Montezuma’s, with nothing more than a kitchen sink-sized machine, boundless zeal, a healthy dose of naiveté, and the lofty goal of shaking up the stale British chocolate industry with some fresh ideas. Very little has changed since that first machine, and the same innocent joy we felt in 1999 when we first set off to explore South America now greets us each morning.
As former lawyers-turned-chocolate-makers, we’ve had to endure some challenging learning curves and do a lot of re-inventing of the wheel, but we do it all because we love the process of making chocolate and because we want to share it with others in an atmosphere we like. To become Britain’s most inventive chocolate brand with a reputation far larger than our physical footprint is something we didn’t train for or even imagine in our wildest fantasies.
Our company’s long-term goal is to become the best small chocolate manufacturer in Britain. However, we also respect our independent, family-oriented, and accountable work ethic, as well as the short lines of communication that characterise our company both internally and externally. No amount of development can make us let go of things; on the contrary, it only makes us cling to them more desperately.
