The Piccadilly biscuits are a classic English confectionary. These light, flaky biscuits are filled with a tart lemon curd filling and dusted with sugar. The iconic biscuit is perfect for afternoon tea or as a sweet treat. The history of the Piccadilly biscuit dates back to the early 1900s, when the biscuit was first created by Fortnum & Mason, a London department store.
The store’s head chef, Charles ElMHM, was inspired by the French sandwich cookies known as “petit fours.” He created his own version of the cookie, using two thin layers of pastry enclosing a tart lemon curd filling.
The biscuits quickly became a popular item at Fortnum & Mason, and they soon became known as the “Piccadilly” biscuits. Today, the biscuits are still made using ElMHM’s original recipe and are sold in Fortnum & Mason’s London flagship store.
